Discover Basilic

Basilic is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Newport Beach, California, at 217 Marine Ave. This cozy restaurant offers a delightful blend of flavors and a welcoming atmosphere that makes it a go-to spot for both locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re a longtime resident or just passing through, stepping into Basilic feels like being welcomed into a friend’s home, where the food is comforting, the service is warm, and every dish tells a story.

The first thing you’ll notice about Basilic is its casual yet sophisticated vibe. The décor is charming without being over-the-top, and the friendly staff creates a laid-back atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. Whether you're coming for a casual lunch with friends or a more intimate dinner, the setting is perfect for both. The menu, which features a mix of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, is designed to satisfy a wide range of tastes, from hearty entrees to lighter, refreshing options.

One of the standout features of Basilic is its commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients. Each dish is crafted with care and attention to detail, showcasing the skill and expertise of the kitchen team. If you're a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, you’re in for a treat. The grilled octopus is a customer favorite-tender, flavorful, and perfectly charred. Another must-try is the house-made hummus, served with warm pita bread that’s soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. It's the perfect start to any meal.

For those who prefer a heartier meal, the lamb chops are a crowd-pleaser. Cooked to perfection, the meat is juicy and tender, with a savory flavor that pairs beautifully with the accompanying sides. The roasted vegetables and couscous complement the lamb perfectly, making for a satisfying and well-rounded meal. If you're not in the mood for lamb, the seafood pasta is another top choice, featuring fresh seafood, a light but flavorful sauce, and perfectly cooked pasta that’s sure to please any palate.

Basilic is also known for its innovative take on classic Mediterranean flavors. The menu includes a selection of salads that are light and refreshing, yet full of bold flavors. The Greek salad, for example, combines crisp cucumbers, juicy tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and feta cheese, all tossed in a simple but flavorful dressing. It’s the kind of salad that feels both indulgent and healthy at the same time, making it a great option for anyone looking for something lighter.

One of the things that sets Basilic apart from other restaurants in the area is the impeccable service. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure that every guest has a memorable experience. They’re knowledgeable about the menu and are more than happy to offer recommendations based on your preferences. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a regular, you’ll feel like part of the family the moment you walk through the door.

For dessert, Basilic offers a selection of sweet treats that are the perfect end to your meal. The baklava is a fan favorite, with layers of flaky pastry, honey, and nuts that provide the perfect balance of sweetness and crunch. If you're looking for something a little more decadent, the chocolate mousse is rich, creamy, and indulgent-definitely a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

What truly makes Basilic stand out is its dedication to providing a top-tier dining experience without the pretension that can sometimes come with fine dining. The restaurant has mastered the balance between quality and comfort, making it the perfect spot for any occasion. Whether you're in the mood for a quick bite or a leisurely dinner with friends, Basilic delivers on all fronts.

Located just off the coast, it’s easy to make a day of your visit. After a delicious meal, you can stroll down to the nearby beach, take in the scenic views, and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. • Came here for a birthday dinner and had a good experience! The restaurant is located right on the busiest street of Balboa Island, and it gives off a cozy, intimate vibe with its wood interiors and dim lighting — though it was a bit too dim at first, making the menu hard to read. The space is small, with just 7 indoor seats and 2 outdoor tables, so it feels very personal. The menu is also quite small, offering a few appetizers and entrees, which I usually take as a good sign of quality also it can a double sword. One bad dish can cost none returned customers. Orange county has way too many good or new restaurants. Appetizers: We ordered the Raclette with Bundnerfleisch and Bread & Butter. The plates arrived piping hot — always a great sign. The raclette was bubbling and full of rich flavor, though the fingerling potatoes didn’t add much. The cured meat was tasty and paired well with the strong mustard. I also ordered a Cabernet, but the wine selection was a bit underwhelming — just “meh.” Entrees: We had the steak and duck. The duck was the star of the night — hands down the best duck dish I’ve ever had. It was juicy, tender, not at all gamey, and absolutely packed with flavor that melted in your mouth. The steak (ordered medium) had a perfect juicy center, but the exterior was a bit too heavy on peppercorns and possibly over-charred, which added bitterness that overpowered the meat’s natural flavor. The boiled veggies on the side didn’t do much — not a lot of seasoning or flavor. Dessert: We shared the caramelized walnut chocolate bar, and it was surprisingly good. I’m not usually a fan of chocolate bars because they tend to be too rich, but this one was well balanced. The walnuts cut the sweetness nicely, and the raspberry & blueberry added the perfect tart contrast. Portion Sizes: Just right. Everyone at the table was able to finish their plates without feeling stuffed or hungry. Overall: A cozy, intimate spot with some standout dishes (especially the duck), excellent plating, and great attention to detail in the food. A few things could be improved — lighting, wine selection, and sides and steak cooking.

  • Really warm and cozy restaurant with excellent Swiss food. The raclette was really good, the duck breast was a small portion so better pair that with something else.

  • Truly an outstanding and menorable dining experience. We had been invited to celebrate some birthdays and our host had dined at Basilic several times. A Friday evening, and the small but cosy restaurant quickly filled up ( and also outdoor tables) The service was inpeccable and pleasant and we never felt rushed. The food was of a very high standard and the presentation was very nice. All dishes we ordered were tastt and clearly prepared with passion.

  • This is a French restaurant hidden in Balboa Island. It is very small but very charming. It feels like a vacation in Europe. The food is exquisite and the service is handsome and friendly.

  • This tiny( less than 10 tables) restaurant in an area drowning in kitch, produces delicious food made with care, attention, and top quality ingredients, beautifully executed and presented. Staff is professional, and knowledgeable about every dish on the well chosen menu. Wine list is impressive, and here too staff had detailed knowledge about the each wine. Every dish was a delight, and all 4 of us had a wonderful dinner.

  • It's not only about the food or wine or service. The ambience of Basilic shows hard work, Your typical movie like place of a hidden gem, where a person worked most of his life to perfect everything in his place. You feel and see that energy and it's beautiful! Food, dessert and wine selection are outstanding. Chef Bernard and family are amazing. 100/10 recommend for date nights, business light Meetings, casual friends and small family dinners.
